Are Serbs misogynists by nature/education?

I was in a relationship with a guy from Serbia, and couldn't put up with his abuse and misogynistic acts any more (I'm from the UK). He only had with me when *he* wanted to, seldom took me out, and when I tried to help him out of his gambling addiction he got angry and said that "he doesn't take advice from a woman". I felt like his slave - that was the last straw. He was good-looking, charming and everything, but his attitude toward women was awful. Was it just him, or is the Serbian tradition like that?
