What does it mean when you hear an owl hooting?

the other morning i got up for work and went to the bathroom to start getting ready. i heard an owl outside the window hoot a couple of times and i left the bathroom and went to my room to get something and heard the same owl now outside my bedroom window. ive always heard that hearing or seeing a white owl was a bad omen. can anyone help me?
