What is the best way to kill roaches?

I live in the South and these freaking roaches are hard to kill. We never had roaches before and are very clean people. Our 700 lb neighbor, who was extremely dirty, died recently and since then everyone else in the neighborhood has had roaches. We have tried Raid, Bengal, and Orthro brands and all it seems to do to these roaches is make them high and they start ovulating and laying eggs like crazy. I want something that will kill them right there on the spot. I'm thinking about boric acid but I have cats. These roaches are mutant and nothing seems to kill them. In fact they don't even look like roaches, they look more like a crossbreed between the local Palmetto bug and the miniature roaches. Please help.
